Progressive Web Apps: breaking the limits of the Web

Hands-on Lab

Modern Web
Modern Web
Intermediate level

In this workshop, we will code a Progressive Web App -an offline-capable app-like web application- using the latest specs and techniques that will work offline and will be installable on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, Chromebooks, and Linux. We will start with the basics, including the Web App Manifest spec, new media queries, and current support on each OS.

We will introduce Service Workers to make the app available offline, including the ability to update the resources in the background. Finally, we will see how to add an installation action in your user interface and how to distribute the app in the App Stores as an optional distribution method.

You just need a laptop with a code editor, Node.js or a web server and the latest version of Chrome installed. After 3 hours and following some code snippets provided, you will end up with a fully working PWA that you can install on desktop and mobile devices.
